Brussels Gay Sports, or BGS, started in 1991 as a group of friends who played volleyball. Since then it has grown and it is now – 25 years later – an association of more than 750 members.

Badminton, body conditioning, capoeira, futsal, hiking, pilates, running, swimming, tango dancing, tennis, volleyball, yoga and water polo. Those are the sports BGS has on offer. But BGS also has a choir, a massage course, a group of improvisation theater, and even vegetarians that unite on a regular basis.

The success of BGS can be measured by the hundreds of people who participate in one or more of our weekly activities around Brussels in a welcoming and tolerant atmosphere.

BGS also promotes sport by organizing and participating in various competitions and large-scale events. We were present during the recent Eurogames in Helsinki and have been to many other tournaments all over the globe. And of course, we also organize the Brussels Games, our more or less annual multi-sports tournament.

This year the Brussels Games took place during the second weekend weekend of September. Around 500 people took part in it and celebrated our 25th anniversary with us! We were happy of its success and grateful that EGLSF recognized our efforts by attending our tournament and giving us an outstanding achievement award during the tournament party!

But, the celebrations aren’t over yet! The last weekend of October, our water polo team will organize the traditional EuroChamps water polo tournament. And only a month later BGS is the proud host of Swim for Life. This annual sponsored swimming marathon takes place every last Sunday of November. The purpose of this event is to raise funds for various HIV/AIDS related causes. Since the beginning, more than € 500,000 has been raised and distributed to a few selected charities.

If you don’t like to swim you can also attend Sing For Life on December 3, the concert of our choir. All proceeds go to Swim For Life. Another proof that BGS is one big family with a huge heart …
