The EuroGames – a multisport event dedicated to diversity and inclusion– will take place in Bern
from July 26th to 29th, 2023. Licensed by the EGLSF (European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation),
and voted by the General Assembly, the decision was announced this week. Bern Pride is to take
place at the same time.
At the end of July 2023, EuroGames will take place in Bern attracting up to 3,000 athletes. This major
annual event is hosted primarily by, and for, the LGBTQI+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer,
Intersex) community and has been held in different European cities since 1992.
From 26 – 29 July, 2023, participants will compete in a wide variety of sports, from badminton,
athletics, floorball and volleyball to swimming and dancing. “The EuroGames offer a multisport
tournament that is open to everyone and to all performance classes,” says Thomas Künzi from the
EuroGames Bern association, which is organising the Bern EuroGames. He emphasizes: “The
EuroGames stand for diversity and inclusion in sports, so it is important to us to be able to welcome
mainstream athletes as well.”
The EuroGames 2023 closes on Saturday 29 July 2023 with the finals of selected sports and a run.
The Bern Pride is planned for the same day with a march through the city center and a street festival.
“This gives the mainstream community of the city of Bern the opportunity to meet the LGBTQI+
community off the field,” says Künzi.
“Bern is not only a sports city, but also a rainbow city with an active LGBTQI+ community. We are
therefore very happy to host the EuroGames in July 2023 and to welcome athletes from all over the
world,”says Mayor Alec von Graffenried. “Since 2016, Bern has been a member of the Rainbow Cities
Network, an international association of cities with the goal of achieving equality for LGBTQI people
in all areas of life, under the law and in everyday life. The city of Bern promotes the diversity of its
population – including the LGBTQI community. Bern is a colorful and cosmopolitan city in the heart
of Europe and the EuroGames 2023 offer an ideal opportunity to present ourselves as such.”
The games take place under the patronage of Gay & Lesbian Sport Bern (GLSBe), the Stadtberner
sports club for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people and their friends. The event is organized
by the EuroGames Bern association.
EGLSF congratulate EuroGames Bern on their successful bid for the 2023 edition of EuroGames –
Europe’s largest participatory LGBTQI multisport event. We look forward to working with the
EuroGames Bern organising committee and our member club Gay & Lesbian Sport Bern (GLSBe) to
offer our members and all European LGBTQI athletes a wonderful EuroGames experience in Bern in
2023.
In 2021 the EuroGames will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark and in 2022 Nijmegen, Netherlands
will host EuroGames. After Zurich in 2000, Bern is bringing the EuroGames to Switzerland for the
second time.
