In the third installment of our PLUSS project series, we shine a spotlight on Team München, Bavaria's largest queer sports club. Founded in 1999, Team München has grown into a dynamic force within the local LGBTQIA+ community, offering a welcoming space for athletes of all backgrounds to engage in sport while fostering inclusivity, solidarity, and equality. With nearly 1,000 members and an impressive array of over 19 sports on offer, Team München not only provides opportunities for athletic achievement but also actively advocates for LGBTQIA+ rights and social change.
This article explores Team München's inspiring journey, its community initiatives, and its ongoing commitment to making sports a safer and more inclusive space for everyone.

A Brief History of Team München: Building Community Through Sport
Team München was established in 1999 with the vision of creating a safe, supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals to participate in sports. Since its founding, the club has expanded significantly and now stands as the largest queer sports club in Bavaria, with nearly 1,000 members. While the primary focus of the club remains athletic excellence and recreational sports, it has also taken on a broader role in advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights, tolerance, and acceptance in both sports and society at large.
The club offers a wide range of sports, from football and handball to volleyball, rugby, and table tennis. Athletes at Team München compete in local Bavarian leagues, where the spirit of camaraderie and inclusivity is just as important as the pursuit of victory. The club’s members are a diverse group, spanning various sexual orientations, gender identities, and backgrounds. This diversity is not only celebrated but encouraged, with Team München actively striving to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
Creating an Inclusive Community: Initiatives and Engagement
Team München's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond its sporting activities. The club is deeply involved in local LGBTQIA+ initiatives, ensuring that its members are engaged and represented in various community events. One key example is their partnership with the Bavarian Football Association, where Team München has a dedicated member who serves as a point of contact for LGBTQIA+ matters. This role helps to make football in Bavaria more inclusive by addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Additionally, Team München hosts quarterly meetings with local queer organizations, providing a space for networking and idea-sharing. These gatherings help strengthen ties within the LGBTQIA+ community, allowing the club to support other initiatives and work collectively towards creating a more inclusive sporting landscape. Volunteers from the club also contribute their time at the Lesbian and Queer Center in Munich, where they work behind the bar once a month, offering a welcoming presence for queer individuals.
These community-focused activities underscore Team München's commitment to building a network of solidarity and inclusion within the broader LGBTQIA+ community. The club is not just a sports organization; it is a vital social hub that provides resources, support, and a sense of belonging to its members.

Attracting More Members: Reaching Underrepresented Groups
One of Team München's ongoing goals is to ensure that all LGBTQIA+ individuals feel encouraged to join, including those from underrepresented communities. To achieve this, the club focuses on creating an environment that is both inclusive and welcoming. This includes developing ally programs to empower non-queer individuals to stand against discrimination and support the LGBTQIA+ community.
To further strengthen its outreach, Team München is working on improving its visibility and engagement with marginalized groups within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, including people of color, transgender individuals, and older adults. Providing accessible spaces for all members, including gender-neutral bathrooms, is just one example of how the club is making its facilities more inclusive for everyone.
Moreover, Team München’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in its internal and external communications, which use inclusive language and highlight the achievements of LGBTQIA+ individuals in leadership positions. The club’s use of social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook allows them to reach a broader audience and share personal stories, event highlights, and resources that resonate with diverse groups within the LGBTQIA+ community.
Collaboration and Advocacy: Promoting LGBTQIA+ Rights
Team München is committed to using its platform to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights within the sports world. This includes collaborating with local LGBTQIA+ organizations, educational institutions, and non-profits to raise awareness and support advocacy campaigns. The club regularly participates in pride events, including workshops and panel discussions that foster open dialogue about LGBTQIA+ issues and promote visibility for queer athletes.
Through these collaborations, Team München helps amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ individuals and organizations that are working to bring about meaningful change. The club also supports key advocacy initiatives, such as the fight against discriminatory laws and practices that affect the LGBTQIA+ community. Team München’s involvement in these efforts plays a crucial role in promoting equality both in and outside of the sporting arena.

Events and Social Activities: Strengthening Community Bonds
Team München understands that fostering community goes beyond just athletic competition. The club organizes a variety of events throughout the year that bring members together outside of the sports field. One such event is the Summer Sports Festival, which celebrates the diversity and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community while promoting sports and physical activity. These events offer a chance for new and potential members to get involved and experience the welcoming atmosphere of the club.
The club also celebrates key LGBTQIA+ milestones such as International Transgender Day of Visibility and National Coming Out Day, providing a platform for education, socialization, and community-building. Additionally, Team München frequently hosts social gatherings, such as BBQs, game nights, and holiday parties, which help members form lasting friendships and create a sense of belonging.
Improving Inclusivity: Ensuring Accessibility for All
Inclusivity is at the heart of Team München’s operations, and the club is continually looking for ways to improve accessibility for all its members. This includes offering gender-neutral options in its facilities and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their identity, feels comfortable participating in sports and social activities. The club also offers training in diversity, equity, and inclusion to its members and volunteers to ensure that everyone’s unique needs are respected and addressed.
For senior members and the FLINTA (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans, and A-gender) community, Team München is committed to creating an environment that is not only welcoming but also empowering. This includes providing mentorship opportunities, offering programs that cater to the specific needs of these groups, and ensuring that everyone can access the resources they need to thrive both within and outside the club.

Looking Ahead: Team München's Vision for the Future
As Team München continues to grow and evolve, the club remains focused on expanding its reach, strengthening its advocacy efforts, and creating more opportunities for all LGBTQIA+ individuals to engage in sports. One of the club’s key priorities is increasing participation among underrepresented groups, including young people, transgender individuals, and those from marginalized racial or socio-economic backgrounds. To this end, the club plans to offer more outreach programs, including school visits, and to host more social and recreational events that allow newcomers to experience the club’s inclusive atmosphere.
Additionally, Team München aims to expand its network of partnerships with other queer sports clubs, organizations, and allies to further its advocacy goals and create even more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ athletes. As the club moves forward, it will continue to uphold its values of equality, solidarity, and respect for all identities.
Join Team München: Be Part of the Change
