The Erasmus+ PLUSS project, led by EGLSF, began the new year with an inspiring online workshop designed to support LGBTQI+ sport leaders in their ongoing battle against discrimination. Held on January 20th, the session introduced participants to the action learning methodology, a powerful tool that fosters collaborative problem-solving and strategic development.

What is Action Learning?
Action learning is a dynamic process where a group of peers helps an individual reflect on and resolve a specific challenge they are facing. The key to this approach is the role of the group: members listen, ask probing questions, and offer support without providing direct solutions. This allows the individual to explore their own ideas and come to new insights, ultimately empowering them to make informed decisions and move forward with their goals.
Facilitated by Jane Stewart, the session focused on helping LGBTQI+ sport leaders overcome the unique challenges they encounter while implementing anti-discrimination strategies within their organizations. The group's thoughtful questioning and collective wisdom provided crucial insights into how these leaders can refine their approaches and build more inclusive sports environments.
Building on Previous Success
This January workshop was part of a series designed to ensure continuous support for LGBTQI+ leaders. It followed a successful workshop in November 2024, which took place in Ghent, Belgium. The ongoing series of online sessions aims to keep the momentum going as part of the PLUSS project's commitment to long-term, sustainable change.
The sessions are designed around four key development areas, known as the GAME areas: Governance, Advocacy, Membership, and Events. Each of these areas represents a critical component in the fight against discrimination and exclusion in sports. By focusing on these areas, participants can enhance their leadership skills, refine their strategies, and build more resilient and inclusive organizations.
The Role of the PLUSS Project
The PLUSS project, funded by the Erasmus+ program, is dedicated to supporting the development of anti-discrimination strategies in LGBTQI+ sports organizations across Europe. By creating spaces for sharing knowledge and strategies, the project aims to reduce discrimination and promote inclusivity in sports. The online workshops and collaborative action learning model are key to fostering a supportive community among LGBTQI+ sport leaders.
Each online session in the series brings together partners and stakeholders from across the project network to share challenges, best practices, and solutions. In doing so, they create a stronger, more united front against discrimination, ensuring that LGBTQI+ individuals can fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of sport.
Looking Ahead
The workshop on January 20th is just the beginning of a series of four online sessions scheduled for the upcoming months. These sessions will continue to build upon the work already done, providing ongoing support for participants as they implement their anti-discrimination strategies and work towards more inclusive sports environments.
By sharing knowledge and expertise, the PLUSS project aims to create a lasting impact, not just for individual organizations, but for the entire sports community. The collaborative nature of the action learning approach ensures that every participant has a voice, and together, they can create systemic change that benefits everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or background.
In conclusion, the PLUSS project represents a critical step forward in the fight against discrimination in sport. Through the use of action learning, the project empowers LGBTQI+ sport leaders to confront challenges, refine their strategies, and ultimately create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all athletes.
The success of the project will depend on the continued commitment and collaboration of all involved, but with the support of the PLUSS network and the strength of action learning, the path towards inclusivity in sport is becoming clearer—and more achievable—every day.
