On Monday, December 2, 2024, partners of the LBTI*Women*Active project gathered virtually for the official launch of this exciting two-year initiative, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The project’s primary goal is to enhance the inclusion and participation of LBTQI women in grassroots sport across Europe.

About the project:

The project aims to achieve this by building a transnational network of LBTQI women athletes, leaders, and coaches in grassroots sport. By facilitating collaboration and the exchange of best practices, LBTQI*Women*Active seeks to develop innovative approaches to inclusion that will improve the experiences of LBTQI women in and through sport. The initiative will also offer LBTQI women the chance to participate in three inclusive Eco-Activity Days, designed to promote physical activity, foster community engagement, and gather valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by LBTQI women in the sports world.

The project consortium consists of six organizations from five countries, with the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) leading the partnership. Other project partners include Activ’Elles04 (France), Panteres Grogues Sports Club (Spain), Club Esportiu LGTB+ Samarucs Valencia (Spain), Discover Football (Germany), and Bilitis Resource Center Foundation (Bulgaria).

During the kick-off meeting, the partners outlined the next steps for the project, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, shared learning, and the development of inclusive mechanisms for LBTQI women’s participation in grassroots sports. The partners are particularly focused on raising awareness about gender equality in sport and identifying successful strategies to foster inclusion across Europe.

Looking ahead, the project partners will meet again in early 2025 to plan the first face-to-face event, which will take place in Barcelona in March. This will mark the beginning of the project’s first hands-on activities, which will provide opportunities for LBTQI women to come together, engage in sport, and further shape the course of the project.

The LBTI*Women*Active project is a step towards a more inclusive sporting environment, and it’s driven by the collective commitment of all partners to create lasting change for LBTQI women in sport.
