The power of sport in addressing homotransphobia
The "Sport, a cure for homotransphobia" project is a transnational initiative running from May 2025 to October 2026, dedicated to combating so-called LGBTQIA+ conversion practices across Europe.
As highlighted by a report from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 24% of LGBTIQ people in Europe have experienced a 'conversion' attempt to change their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. These practices, aimed at altering an individual's sexual orientation and/or gender identity, were unequivocally declared torture by the United Nations in 2020.
This project is dedicated to confronting the critical issue of "conversion therapies" by conducting an in-depth analysis of their prevalence and impact within the LGBTQIA+ community. A particular focus will be on engaging individuals who may be less integrated into traditional advocacy and activism networks. The ultimate objective is to leverage insights gathered from this comprehensive analysis to secure formal commitments from European municipalities to actively oppose these practices.
Some of the primary actions for the project will include the following:
- Quantitative analysis: an online survey will be distributed via on-site stations during the Lyon 2025 Eurogames, Europe's premier LGBTQIA+ sports event. This event will draw over 4,000 participants from across Europe and beyond.
- Personal testimonies: ten individuals from the Eurogames participants will be selected to share their personal stories in a powerful documentary video.
- Campaign for change: A European campaign called Play in Colour invites municipalities to stand against LGBTQIA+ conversion practices. It builds on the Meglio a Colori initiative and the ACT (Against Conversion Therapy) movement, following a petition with over 1.2 million signatures.
- European Protocol Development: An accessible online and in-person webinar will bring together Italian and activist groups from various EU countries. This event will facilitate the development of a European protocol for local initiatives, designed to support administrations committed to countering conversion attempts and the harmful rhetoric of deviance that underpins them.
- Official events: the European protocol will be officially presented at events with the municipal administrations that join the campaign, commencing with the cities of Rome, Milan, and Lyon.
