The European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) has joined the European Commission's new Expert Group on LGBTIQ+ Equality, marking an important milestone in strengthening the representation of sport within European equality policy.

EGLSF became a member of the group at the beginning of 2026, following its selection as a framework partner under the EU's Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme. This is the first time EGLSF has been represented in the European Commission's LGBTIQ+ equality expert group structures.

The Expert Group brings together representatives of EU Member States, European institutions and civil society organisations to support the implementation of the EU LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy 2026–2030.

EGLSF's participation provides an important opportunity to represent the interests of its members and the wider European LGBTIQ+ sport movement directly within European equality discussions. It also creates opportunities to build relationships with Member States, raise awareness of the challenges facing LGBTIQ+ people in sport, and encourage greater recognition and support for inclusive sport at national and European levels.

Speaking at the group's first meeting in Brussels earlier this year, EGLSF Co-President Hugh Torrance underlined the importance of this representation:

"Ensuring that all people can participate safely, fairly and with dignity is therefore not only a sport issue, but an equality issue that concerns us all."

Most recently, Hugh Torrance participated in the Expert Group's October meeting in Dublin, with European Projects Coordinator Michele Mommi also joining. EGLSF highlighted the importance of including sport within national LGBTIQ+ equality action plans, recognising their contribution to health, wellbeing, participation, safety and belonging.

EGLSF also shared updates on its work, especially the first year of our CERV sub-granting programme supporting member clubs.

A further priority at both meetings was raising awareness of the forthcoming EuroGames in Cardiff in 2027 and Frankfurt in 2028. EGLSF highlighted their significance as major European LGBTIQ+ sporting and community events, and as important opportunities for visibility, participation and equality. Through these discussions, EGLSF is encouraging Member States to recognise the importance of the EuroGames and explore opportunities to engage with and support these events.

Through its membership of the Expert Group, EGLSF will continue to represent the interests of its members, strengthen relationships with European institutions and governments, and advance LGBTIQ+ equality through and within sport.
